CBD and Skincare

CBD and skincare are inextricably linked, so it’s no surprise that brands have started infusing CBD into a variety of topical products, including creams, gels, lotions, balms, lip balms, skin serums, and more.

With topical products, CBD is obtained from cannabis (hemp) plants and infused into a carrier oil such as coconut oil, or olive oil. These fats promote the absorption and efficacy of this cannabinoid.

As a result of its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), CBD provides a variety of health benefits, such as skincare and the alleviation of localized skin issues (like pain, inflammation, and discomfort) while also promoting general skin health. In the United States, the use of CBD oil (derived from hemp) is legal as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC.

In this post, we’ll delve into the benefits of CBD oil for skin care and how it works.

What is CBD oil?

CBD is only one of a large number of cannabinoids that have been discovered in the cannabis plant. Since hemp plants contain more CBD than THC, industrial hemp is often used to produce the vast majority of CBD oil now available on the market. CBD oil is available in numerous concentrations and may be used to treat a variety of ailments and conditions.

The endocannabinoid receptor system (ECS) is a complex network of neurotransmitters and cannabinoid receptors found in the human body. Cannabinoids and the ECS may have a role in numerous biological functions, according to research, and the skin contains cannabinoid receptors.

What the Science Says about CBD and skincare

Although studies have demonstrated that CBD has a wide range of health benefits, what about skincare in particular? While research on CBD’s skincare benefits is ongoing, cannabinoids have long been recognized as excellent antioxidants. CBD is also known to include a variety of essential amino acids and B-complex vitamins. We also now know that the skin has its own endocannabinoid system, which helps keep it healthy and balanced.

The fundamental cause of most skin diseases and disorders is an imbalance. CBD may be able to assist restore that equilibrium.

According to Awais Spall, a formulation chemist and cannabis researcher with a background in skincare, CBD’s health-promoting properties originate largely from its interaction with the endocannabinoid system and crosstalk between these pathways and several other receptor pathways in the body.

He says: “We’ve recently discovered that the outer layer of our skin, the epidermis, has a dense network of CB1 and CB2 receptors. CBD interacts with these pathways and other nerve pathways across the epidermis and dermis.” CBD, as a regulating and balancing component, can benefit a wide range of skin types and disorders.

Skin conditions that CBD can help

Numerous research reviews indicate CBD oil can be used to treat a variety of skin ailments, such as:

Acne

Acne is a prevalent skin condition in humans. CBD contains a variety of chemicals that have oil-reducing, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, all of which may contribute to the improvement of acne. CBD’s influence on human sebocytes was investigated in a 2014 research paper

These are the cells that make sebum, an oily, waxy material produced by the skin. While sebum is necessary for skin protection, excessive sebum can result in acne. Research suggests that CBD may be able to suppress sebocytes from producing an excessive amount of sebum.

A 2016 analysis cites the cannabis plant’s potential antifungal and antibacterial capabilities. This may help prevent acne caused by skin infections. There has also been extensive research regarding CBD’s ability to fade and improve the appearance of acne scars.

Dryness and itching

According to research done in 2019, CBD may be beneficial for treating several common symptoms of skin diseases, including dryness, and itching. CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects may be particularly beneficial in diminishing potential eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis triggers. CBD oil may be beneficial for persons with sensitive skin due to its ability to soothe skin and diminish the appearance of irritation.

Aging and wrinkles

CBD has been demonstrated to possess significant antioxidant effects. Given that oxidative stress may play a part in the aging process, CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce the appearance of skin aging.

Infection

As aforementioned, the cannabis plant may contain antifungal and antibiotic properties that could be beneficial in treating skin infections.

Inflammation

Inflammation both causes and aggravates skin diseases. Evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system regulates inflammatory responses. CBD oil can be used to treat and prevent several skin diseases as a safer alternative to drugs such as corticosteroids. CBD’s anti-inflammatory activities are due to its interaction with CB2 receptors in the skin’s own ECS.

When CBD stimulates these receptors, it balances immune system cell communication, lowering inflammation and reducing redness and swelling. As a result, CBD is the most effective way to relieve the discomfort produced by rosacea, eczema, or even psoriasis symptoms.

How CBD may be used to treat skin issues

To decide how frequently to use a CBD product, how much to use, and how to apply it, it is critical to carefully read and follow the instructions on the label and packaging of the skincare product.

TOPICALLY

CBD topicals are best used to address localized symptoms or to treat your skin from the outside and are a useful product to add to your skincare routine. CBD interacts with the skin’s endocannabinoid system, namely the CB2 receptors, to provide pain, inflammation, and other symptom alleviation.

CBD topicals are any CBD-containing items that may be applied to the skin, such as lotions, creams, balms, roll-ons, and salves. CBD lotions, creams, and balms are typically not edible and are intended to be applied directly to affected areas of the skin.

To provide a topical treatment with a chance to work, clean the target area first. Also, test a little patch first to ensure you are not allergic. Remove any clothing from the area being treated, and only apply CBD topicals on dry skin. CBD cream should not be used directly to open wounds, sores, or cuts.

Several popular CBD topicals on the market include:

Lotions, creams, and salves:

These are frequently administered topically to alleviate pain and inflammation.

Oils, ointments, and serums:

These are typically used to treat conditions such as burns, eczema, acne, dry skin, and psoriasis. Beauty applications include anti-aging serums, beard creams, tattoo ointments, and other hair and skin products.

The base, which can be an oil, cream, wax, or anything similar, acts as a carrier agent in topical CBD skincare. CBD and other cannabinoids bind with fatty acids; the carrier agent guarantees that the CBD is distributed equally and efficiently to afflicted areas of the skin and body.

Besides ensuring the smooth application of CBD to skin problems and other afflicted regions, the carrier agent also allows the CBD to cling to the skin allowing it to be effective for an extended period. If you apply CBD oil to your skin that is not topical it will lack the necessary carrier to adhere to your skin sufficiently to interact with the ECS locally.

CBD skincare products must interact with the endocannabinoid system in some way to be effective, either through the bloodstream or the skin’s layers. Simply applying oils to the skin will not ensure that this occurs.

ORALLY

If a skin problem is caused by inflammation or an imbalance CBD oil, capsules, or edibles may be beneficial. CBD oil has a high bioavailability and produces rapid results. CBD oil may be taken orally by putting a few drops under the tongue and keeping the oil there for up to 1 minute before swallowing.

The dose will vary depending on the potency of the CBD oil and the person’s body weight. New users of CBD should begin with the smallest possible dose and gradually increase the amount after becoming familiar with how their bodies react to the substance.

Final thoughts

Although research on CBD’s health benefits and its effect on the skin is still in its early stages, there is growing evidence that CBD may have a number of medicinal properties and may do wonders for your skin. Having said that, customers should not use CBD as a substitute for other prescribed treatments without first consulting a doctor or healthcare practitioner.
