CBG Benefits: The Mother of All Cannabinoids

Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) are non-psychoactive compounds in cannabis and hemp plants. Now, we know you’ve heard of CBD, but what the heck is CBG, and what makes it so special to be called the mother of all cannabinoids?

If you’ve never heard of CBG before, keep reading, as we’ll cover everything you need to know about CBG, from what it is, to whether or not it’s legal and potential CBG benefits.

What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabis Sativa, also known as Indian hemp or C. Sativa, is a herbaceous plant that is indigenous to central and western Asia. It is often referred to as cannabis. People grow this plant for its medicinal properties as well as for hemp, a natural textile material.

There are over 400 chemical compounds found in Cannabis Sativa, with about 100 that are biologically active. Cannabinoids are the most prominent of these compounds. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. CBD and CBG are two other cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp plants

What is CBD?

Unlike THC, CBD does not give users the “high” that many people associate with cannabis usage.

According to imaging studies, CBD may significantly change brain activity and connection patterns. Research also suggests that it may be beneficial for the following conditions:

  • anxiety
  • auto-inflammatory diseases
  • neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s disease Alzheimer’s

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol, often known as CBG, is one of more than 100 cannabinoids that are present in hemp and cannabis plants.

Fun Fact: Did you know that phytocannabinoids are all derived from the primary cannabinoid cannabigerolic acid (CBG)?

Cannabigerolic acid is produced by young hemp and cannabis plants. Cannabidiolic acid (CBGA) transforms into tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (CBDA) as the plant ages (THCA). Afterward, these two compounds are transformed into CBD and THC. CBGA that is left over converts into CBG.

Even though CBG was initially discovered in 1964, it didn’t attract much attention at the time, and because of that, there isn’t a lot of research on this cannabinoid. While current research is in the preclinical phases, what is known so far suggests that CBG benefits may be plentiful.

CBD vs CBG: What’s the Difference?

Early research suggests CGB may be very similar to CBD. Both are non-psychoactive and have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and analgesic properties. But similar isn’t identical. So, what sets them apart?

The biggest difference is that CBD is a major cannabinoid, and CBG is a minor cannabinoid. This simply means that there are higher concentrations of CBD found in cannabis and hemp plants compared to CBG. Another difference is that they react differently when interacting with the body’s cannabinoid receptors.

Are CBD and CBG Legal?

The Controlled Substances Act’s legal definition of cannabis was changed by the 2018 Farm Bill to exclude hemp.

As long as they contain less than 0.3% THC, hemp-derived CBD, and CBG products are legal on a federal level. That being said, not all states have legalized these cannabinoids. So you should research each state’s legislation before making assumptions about legality.

CBG Benefits

As research into CBG expands, the potential therapeutic benefits of this cannabinoid become more apparent.

Research suggests that CBG could offer medicinal benefits that may be used in the treatment of several different neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and multiple sclerosis. Its anti-inflammatory properties may also alleviate the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBS)

Further research suggests that CBG’s painkilling properties may be superior to those of THC. CBG also interacts with the endocannabinoid system’s CB1 and CB2 receptors, which influence pain, inflammation, and even heat sensitivity. The cannabinoid also appears to have antibacterial and cancer-fighting properties. It may also increase dopamine levels, as well as support sleep and appetite regulation.

More research is needed to confirm CBG benefits, but it’s looking pretty promising.

How is CBG Consumed?

CBG oil is one option, but it’s often super pricey and can be hard to find.

Broad-spectrum CBD oils are an alternative that includes a whole bunch of different cannabinoids, including CBG (except THC).  Via a phenomenon known as the entourage effect, combining cannabinoids can improve their combined efficacy. You can also opt for a full-spectrum CBD oil, which usually contains several cannabinoids, including CBG and THC.

Conclusion: CBG Benefits and More

Current research on CBG is still somewhat limited, even though it is growing in popularity. While it could have several benefits, little is known regarding its side effects or possible drug interactions.

If you’re keen to try it, we’d recommend trying a broad-spectrum or full-spectrum CBD oil or capsule that contains CBG
