Chocolate and CBD: Two peas in a (cacao) pod

Chocolate, glorious chocolate. There’s a reason why this food is one of the world’s most adored and renowned delicacies. Even the Latin name for the plant, Theobroma cacao, translates as “food of the gods”.

There are several reasons to love this ancient food: its delectable flavor, creamy texture, and how it just seems to make you happy. But it turns out there is some science behind the brief rush of happiness that chocolate provides – the same science behind why CBD may affect a positive mood.

In this article we explain what makes the combination of chocolate and CBD a match made in heaven!

The Science Bit

The “bliss molecule” Anandamide (AEA) is an endogenous neurotransmitter synthesized from arachidonic acid. The name originates from the Sanskrit word ananda, which translates as “joy, happiness, and enjoyment.”

This is a chemical messenger produced by your body—a potent neurotransmitter that stimulates serotonin and dopamine production, which helps maintain a healthy mood, appetite, and brain health.

The great news is that AEA is found in chocolate. Since chocolate also contains fat, when chocolate and CBD are combined, the effects of CBD last longer.

Cacao (the primary component in chocolate) and hemp-derived CBD naturally contain AEA and molecules that slow its breakdown (N-acylethanolamines).

It works like this: Human beings possess an enzyme called fatty acid amide hydrolase, or FAAH. Once AEA reaches a cell, it is degraded by FAAH.

CBD and chocolate both suppress FAAH’s capacity to degrade AEA, extending the duration of our own naturally occurring joy.

Research has revealed that blocking AEA breakdown in the body enhanced mood and reversed stress-induced anxiety in mice. Low levels of AEA were adversely linked with stress, anxiety, and fear responses.

Benefits of Chocolate

Chocolate, like CBD, has potent antioxidant effects. Containing a range of essential minerals, including magnesium, copper, potassium, and iron, chocolate provides a higher concentration of antioxidants than most food.

When consumed in moderation, a good quality, high-percentage dark chocolate may provide the following benefits:

Of course, consuming an excessive amount of chocolate may have negative consequences, such as weight gain. According to research, consuming 25g of chocolate every day may cause weight gain. Lower dosages of 6g, on the other hand, did not affect body weight.

Chocolate also contains tryptophan, an amino acid found in cacao. The brain uses tryptophan to manufacture serotonin, which plays a critical role in mood regulation.

In a study published in 2009, the role of L-tryptophan in serotonin synthesis is emphasized: “As the sole precursor of serotonin, experimental research has shown that L-tryptophan’s role in brain serotonin synthesis is an important factor in mood, behavior, and cognition.”

Benefits of CBD

CBD offers a host of benefits and may help alleviate the symptoms of the following ailments:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Insomnia
  • Epilepsy
  • Chronic pain, such as arthritis
  • Parkinson’s disease

Combining Chocolate and CBD

Eating chocolate in its purest form is preferable to eating chocolate with added sugar. That means you should eat dark rather than milk chocolate to get the maximum AEA out of it.

You can also opt for a supercharged treat and try a recipe that blends chocolate with CBD. For more information regarding the ins and outs of cooking with CBD, click here.

Concluding thoughts

The combination of CBD and chocolate is an excellent way to receive your daily dosage of cannabinoid while still tasting delicious. These CBD chocolate recipes are a delightful and practical way to receive your daily dose.

Bear in mind that the CBD contained in edibles may not be absorbed as quickly as other forms of CBD. This is because the active ingredients travel via your digestive tract and liver.

CBD is most effective when taken sublingually (under the tongue), vaped, or applied topically. Always consult your physician before beginning to use any CBD products. They will advise you on the best appropriate dosage and route of administration for your particular circumstances.
