What is CBD?

In today’s world, there’s a heavy focus on physical health—keeping the body healthy and strong. However, the mind part of the “Body + Mind = Vitality” equation is often overlooked (but it is SO important!). In fact, taking care of your psychological well-being is just as essential as taking care of your physical health.

So, how do you do this in a world constantly screaming for your attention from all angles? Fortunately, many modalities (such as yoga, meditation, a nutritious diet, etc.) can help you quiet the external noise and nurture good mental health. Although many people don’t realize it, CBD can also be effective in helping to treat various mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety.

When CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, it can help to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and promote better sleep. CBD has also shown promise in treating other mental health conditions, such as PTSD.

If you’re battling with your mental health, consider talking to your mental health practitioner about trying CBD. It may help you find relief from your symptoms and improve your overall well-being. There are a few ways how CBD can help you practice better mental health.

Is CBD legal?

CBD is legal in the US as long as it comes from hemp that contains less than 0.3% THC.

Can CBD help with depression?

Several studies have shown that CBD can help to alleviate the symptoms of depression, and it may even be able to prevent it from occurring:

  • In 2020, a study that involved exposing rats to various stressors while treating them with CBD over 28 days found that CBD helped decrease the symptoms of depression and anhedonia (inability to experience pleasure)
  • In 2018, a study of medical cannabis users had them track their symptoms and doses and then analyzed these results. The research revealed that cannabis helped reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Users reported a 50% reduction in symptoms of depression. The researchers also found that a high amount of CBD (>9.5%) and a low amount of THC (<5.5%) produced the largest improvements in depression.
  • In 2019, a case study of an adolescent with multiple substance use disorders, depression, and anxiety found that CBD treatment over an 8-week period decreased depression and anxiety symptoms. The person was also able to attain abstinence from all substances and stop taking antidepressant medications.

Overall, the research on CBD seems to suggest that it can help reduce depression. However, there are relatively few published studies on CBD as a treatment for depression in humans. So more research is needed to know for sure whether CBD is an effective treatment for depression.

Is CBD safe?

CBD oil has been shown to be safe in human trials with no significant side effects. This makes it a promising option for those looking for a natural treatment for mental health conditions.

Even though more research is needed to find out if CBD oil is safe in the long run, it seems to be a safe and promising option for people who want a natural way to treat mental health problems.

How does CBD work with antidepressants?

Antidepressants are drugs that are used to treat depression. They work by increasing neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin and norepinephrine. These chemicals are responsible for regulating mood and emotion.

If you are currently taking medication for depression, your psychiatrist or healthcare provider may say that it is OK to take CBD products simultaneously.

However, CBD is not recommended if you are taking carbamazepine (Tegretol), an anti-seizure medication that is sometimes used to treat bipolar disorder. That’s because CBD may increase the risk of side effects when taking this medication.

What is the best way to take CBD for mental health benefits?

When taking CBD for mental health benefits, it is crucial to begin with a low dose and then gradually increase it as required. Choosing a high-quality CBD product from a reputable manufacturer is also important.

CBD is available in several different forms, including:

  • Oils
  • Vapor
  • Nasal sprays
  • Capsules
  • Edibles
  • Creams

CBD oils are the most common way to consume these products. These oils can be placed directly under the tongue or mixed in liquids like tea or coffee (Capsules and edibles are also another popular options)

For the maximum benefit, individuals looking to treat depression may want to consider using products with a higher concentration of CBD (>9.5%) and a low concentration of THC (<5.5%).

Unfortunately, there are currently no guidelines on the recommended dosage for taking CBD to treat depression. For more information about whether CBD is a good treatment for you and the proper dosage, speak with your medical provider.

The (Very Important) Bottom Line

Research involving CBD as a helpful treatment for depression and other mental health conditions is encouraging but more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions and to establish a proper dosage.

If you’re considering CBD treatment for mental health issues or are already utilizing it, discuss the pros, cons and latest research with your healthcare provider to collaborate and embark on a suitable treatment plan.
