How CBD Can Liven Up Your Libido & Improve Your Sex Life

You know CBD—the cool kid who hit the scene just a few years ago? Well, it turns out that kid has now become a teenager, and he’s still as cool as ever, showing up everywhere — and for good reason!

Derived from the cannabis plant, cannabidiol is a well-known component of the plant. Cannabidiol or CBD-based medicines may be used for various purposes, including pain relief, anxiety control, and seizure management.

While it remains anecdotal, some people claim that cannabidiol can improve users’ sex lives by boosting libido and lubrication. Intrigued? With Valentine’s Day around the corner, you most definitely should be!

This article will examine cannabidiol’s potential to boost libido, enhance orgasm, foster intimacy, and all the other fabulous things that sex and CBD bring.

What effect does CBD have on libido?

To better understand how cannabidiol can liven up your libido and improve your sex life, let’s revisit how cannabidiol is believed to work on the body.

Tiny receptors located throughout your body are part of a more extensive system known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Think of these receptors as locks that can be activated by a key — in this example, CBD.

While cannabidiol cannot directly “open” them, it can trigger a cascade of bodily reactions that activate the system. The body responds to CBD in several ways, including as an anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant, due to its indirect activation.

What’s interesting is that researchers have discovered ECS receptors in reproductive organs such as the testicles.

According to a review of the existing research on cannabidiol and anxiety published in the journal Neurotherapeutics, CBD may also help to alleviate anxiety, particularly social anxiety disorder.

Some people can experience anxiety about sexual performance, resulting in decreased arousal. This has led scientists to theorize that cannabidiol supplements may enhance libido by reducing cortisol and activating the PNS (parasympathetic nervous system).

However, due to the scarcity of human experiments on this subject, it is challenging to propose CBD doses or to state that it works definitively.

Reaching Orgasm

If the Big O has proven elusive (or unsatisfying), maybe it’s time to consider cannabidiol? Anecdotal evidence suggests that applying CBD-infused lubricants directly to the genitalia enhances blood flow to the region, increasing blood flow to the female genitals.

This increases sexual arousal and the intensity of orgasms. According to a 2019 review, the use of CBD resulted in longer, more satisfying orgasms by boosting blood flow to tissues and enhancing nerve sensation, both of which can intensify an orgasm.

Pain, Be Gone

One of the most well-known applications of CBD is an analgesic – a substance used to alleviate pain. Pain during sex is a significant issue for many women.

According to some estimates, dyspareunia (a blanket term for diseases resulting in painful sex) is a barrier that prevents up to 40% of women from enjoying — or even feeling — closeness and pleasure.

Lubricants and suppositories can improve pleasure and desire by raising blood flow, which improves lubrication and feeling, relaxing smooth muscle tissue, and relieving tension.

This is most likely due to cannabidiol’s well-known anti-inflammatory qualities and muscle relaxing capabilities (less pain, inflammation, and tension would all contribute toward alleviating dyspareunia).

Moreover, in a 2019 poll of over 500 individuals conducted by Remedy Review, 98% of respondents indicated that cannabidiol helped relieve discomfort associated with sex.

Erectile dysfunction (ED)

According to a published article in BioMed Research International, Ayurvedic practitioners have long utilized Cannabis sativa, the plant CBD is derived from, to enhance ejaculatory function and sexual performance.

The exact mechanism through which cannabidiol may help with ED is unknown. One theory is that CBD may help relax blood arteries and increase blood flow. Improved blood flow to the penis can alleviate ED and enable more longer-lasting intercourse.

The problem is that doctors have not conducted specific studies on the effects of cannabidiol on the penis. According to the journal JCI Insight, a single cannabidiol dosage helps lower blood pressure

However, the researchers in this study examined arteries leading to the heart, not those leading to the groin.

Balancing Hormone Levels

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) functions in the body to maintain homeostasis, regulating systems and organ function toward balance and harmony. CBD might assist your body in balancing hormone levels, which may improve sex drive.

As a result, cannabidiol’s link with our hormones and reproductive health is likely complex, as a balanced body is ultimately fertile and vital (during the reproductive years).

CBD can help with some of the symptoms of hormonal imbalance, such as pain, anxiety, or sleeplessness.

This also relates to how it (ostensibly) aids the body in dealing with stress. In principle, your hormones will adjust accordingly if you manage physical stress effectively.

Emotional Intimacy

Cannabidiol can enhance your sex life by facilitating a more intense emotional connection during intimacy. It does this by elevating the blood concentration of anandamide, an endocannabinoid neurotransmitter intimately related to oxytocin, often known as the ‘cuddle chemical,’ ‘hug hormone,’ ‘love hormone’.

The term ‘anandamide‘ comes from ‘ananda,‘ a Sanskrit word meaning “joy, bliss, delight”. Research has demonstrated that increasing anandamide levels during social interaction, including sexual encounters, enhances the pleasure associated with a relationship.

How to use CBD

CBD products may be incorporated into your sex life in various ways:

  •  Using cannabidiol edibles before intercourse to encourage more fulfilling sex
  •  Foreplay with a cannabidiol massage oil
  •  Using cannabidiol lubricants to alleviate dryness and increase pleasure
  •  Utilizing cannabidiol oil before sex to lessen anxiety and increase sensation

The list is likely to grow as scientists continue to investigate the effects of CBD on our sexual functioning.

A possible love potion?

CBD products marketed to improve sex are becoming more widely available. Currently, there seems to be more talk than research regarding the effectiveness of CBD products.

Due to the low number of known adverse effects associated with CBD products, these products may be worth considering if you’re seeking ways to improve your sex life.
