Among the massive frenzy of hemp-derived cannabinoids sweeping the US, very few have eluded public awareness more than HHC (also known as hexahydrocannabinol). However, searching for the substance reveals a cornucopia of results, including the effects, if it’s legal, and whether it’s natural.
Making sense of HHC isn’t easy, partly because it’s new to the market and is only available from a few retailers, usually in vape carts. This post will explore everything about HHC and why the compound is becoming increasingly popular.
What is HHC?
Before diving into why HHC is becoming the next best thing since sliced bread, let’s do a quick recap…
HHC was initially created in 1944 by American chemist Roger Adams, who hydrogenated Delta-9 THC by adding hydrogen molecules. (Hydrogenation is not limited to cannabis production; a similar process is used to convert vegetable oil into margarine!)
While HHC was originally made from standard THC, the cannabinoid is now commonly synthesized using hemp, the low-THC variety of the plant that Congress declared federally legal in the 2018 Agricultural bill, enabling HHC to grow lawfully.
How is HHC created?
The procedure consists of multiple steps. It starts with CBD, which is taken from raw hemp, distilled, and separated as a powder. Things become a little trickier from there.
The production of HHC is a patented process that takes place inside a chemical reactor. Simply put, the CBD is fed into the reactor, and HHC is produced.
So, why do people enjoy HHC so much?
There are two main reasons why people enjoy using HHC.
1. HHC is popular as a recreational substance.
HHC is more potent than Delta 8 THC but somewhat less potent than Delta 9 THC. Some users claim that the psychoactive effects of HHC are milder than the effects of Delta-9 THC and somewhat stronger than the “high” caused by Delta-8 THC.
2. HHC has excellent therapeutic benefits
Since HHC is a relatively new field of study, scientists have yet to learn much about its therapeutic advantages. However, the following benefits have been reported:
Anti-inflammatory
In 2007, Japanese researchers discovered that HHC had exceptional pain-relieving capabilities in an animal study. Its mode of action is similar to that of THC, i.e., HHC molecules interact with central nervous system receptors, inhibiting the pain transmission pathway. As a consequence, it aids in the reduction of chronic pain.
Anxiety and tension
According to researchers, HHC has a powerful anxiolytic impact. HHC stimulates brain cells to create endorphins, or “feel-good” chemicals, resulting in pleasure and relaxation. It decreases anxiety and stress by lowering norepinephrine synthesis.
Sleep promotion
HHC’s capacity to promote sleep is another noteworthy effect. Researchers have discovered that HHC might help enhance sleep time and remedy sleep problems such as insomnia.
HHC FAQs
Is HHC detectable on a drug test?
Perhaps some of HHC’s attraction arises from anecdotal reports that it can elude testing. However, there is no firm proof that HHC does not appear on a THC drug test. Don’t base your job or career on hearsay.
Is it safe to ingest HHC?
There is presently no indication that HHC is any less safe than THC. However, as with any novel hemp-derived cannabinoids, there is no standard dosage and little to no study on the immediate or long-term effects of HHC intake.
HHC product producers and merchants are not obliged to test their goods for potency and purity since hemp-derived cannabinoids (including HHC) are not subject to THC restrictions in legal adult-use jurisdictions.
FYI: We require all our products to be lab tested before we sell any item to the public.
Is HHC legal in the US?
Most legal experts agree that HHC is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill as long as it’s derived from hemp and does not exceed 0.3% THC. However, some states have chosen to restrict alternative cannabinoids like Delta-8 THC.
For the time being, HHC products live (and prosper) in the hazy legal space between hemp (which is legal across the country) and THC (which is not).
